The Faces We Pass By Everyday
Portrait Paintings by Alex Sandvoss
July 6th to 12th, 2018
Noon to 8 pm daily
Saturday, July 7th Noon to 5 pm.
Opening Reception: Friday, July 6th 6 pm.

Debuting this summer, The Faces We Pass by Every Day Exhibition, in conjunction with Megaphone Magazine, is the inaugural show from emerging artist, Alex Sandvoss. Check out some of her work on her instagram: https://instagram.com/sahdahtay/
The exhibition will not only showcase Sandvoss’s tremendous talent, but aims to showcase all members of our community with the dignity and grace they deserve.

This exhibition of portrait paintings in oil, features some of Vancouver’s most vulnerable people; a community who are often maligned and ignored by society at large. Alex Sandvoss said, “People think of communities in such a small way, but actually, we all belong to a global community of people. The Dalai Lama said that we all belong to the society of humanity, and so I wanted to showcase these people, their beauty, their strength and their dignity; because there is so much more to their stories than their struggles. We’re all members of the same global community.”

Just as Sandvoss aims to highlight people’s amazing life stories, her own story of how she came to be such an accomplished artist is also a remarkable tale.

Sandvoss has no formal training in art (although her mother and grandfather are both art teachers), and she discovered her natural talent for painting, whilst studying for a music degree at McGill University.

“The evolution of this project began a couple of years ago, when I was working downtown, and I had to commute every day from Langley. I was always really early for work, and Pat (one of the portrait subjects, and a Megaphone vendor at the time) was just so friendly, and over time, we would sit and talk. He was just so kind and generous with me, and he very much awakened me to the fact that these are people we pass by every day.”

Several of the paintings feature Megaphone vendors! Come on down on July 6th to see who is featured. Alex has generously offered 20% of proceeds to go to the subjects in the painting, and 20% to go to Megaphone. Please invite your friends to this incredible exhibition.
