AMS of UBC
AMS of UBC Vancouver 6133 University Boulevard, Vancouver, British Columbia V6T 1Z1
My name is Julia Burnham (she/hers) and I'm running to be your next AMS Vice President Academic and University Affairs (VPAUA), and student-at-large on the UBC Vancouver Senate.
My platform is about intersectional approaches to student success and holding both UBC and the AMS accountable to student voices. For full details, check out votejulia.ca.
— ✔︎ EXPERIENCE
As the current AMS Campaigns and Outreach Commissioner, I’ve run our #TextbookBroke
campaign, coordinated policy consultations and have been grateful to support the growth of the AMS Indigenous Committee. Previously, I spent three years reporting for Ubyssey News and holding our university accountable. I've also lended my hand to innovative educational opportunities at UBC's Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Health, Humanities 101 Community Programme and the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology.
— ✔︎ PLATFORM
The VPAUA office has a lot of long-term advocacy goals that I am excited to continue working on, but I've chosen to highlight the new ideas I can bring to the table. I want to push the envelope and I'm here to offer tangible solutions to the problems we encounter on this campus. My main goals are:
VP ACADEMIC AND UNIVERSITY AFFAIRS
❏ Keep the SASC at the forefront of the upcoming review of UBC’s Sexual Assault and Other Sexual Misconduct policy
❏ Renegotiate the AMS/GSS Health and Dental Plan to increase coverage for mental health services
❏ Push UBC to divest from fossil fuels
❏ Transparent advocacy through r/ubc AMA engagement and reviving the AMS Advocacy Newsletter
❏ Holistic Affordability through continuing our focus on the development of Open Educational Resources (OERs) and student housing priorities with UBC Hospitality Trust
❏ Lobby faculty and staff for the full five-day Fall Reading Break
❏ Review the UBC Awards criteria to increase accessibility and lower the scholarship maintenance strain on students
❏ Advocate for a long-overdue external governance review of the UBC Vancouver Senate

— I would like to acknowledge that my campaign takes place on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam) people. As an uninvited guest on this territory, I am actively critical of how colonial violence shapes institutions, like UBC and the AMS, and the land on which we learn.
